The best of Bonaire is in the water — but you don't have to get wet to see it. The island's boat scene runs from glass-bottom reef tours where nobody needs a swimsuit to catamaran snorkel sails, sunset cruises and full private charters. Almost everything departs from the Kralendijk waterfront, and almost everything points at the same star: Klein Bonaire, the uninhabited islet just offshore.
The lineup, decoded
Glass-bottom reef tours. The reef for non-swimmers, grandparents and small kids — you watch coral and fish through the hull, dry from start to finish. The easiest way to show someone why the whole island is obsessed with what's underwater:
Sail & snorkel day trips. The classic Bonaire boat day: sail across to Klein Bonaire, snorkel the reefs you can't reach from town, and cruise back. Shared trips keep it social and affordable.
Sunset sails. Golden-hour light over Klein Bonaire with a drink in hand is the island at its most photogenic. Some trips add a snorkel stop before the sun show; others add a barbecue.
Brunch & BBQ boats. Food-first cruising — think brunch with a snorkel stop and a rope swing, or an evening barbecue on the water. Great for groups and celebrations.
Private charters. Your own boat, your own pace, your own playlist. The go-to for proposals, anniversaries and families who want the deck to themselves.

The Bonaire Yacht Charters fleet
One local operator runs the island’s proper fleet from the Kralendijk waterfront: the catamaran Maxim — the one you’ll see anchored off the reef with people jumping off the bow — the sailing yacht Compass, and the Axopar 45 Brabus for those who’d rather fly along the coast than float. Shared trips if you’re social, the whole boat if it’s an occasion.
Sailing purist? The Compass also sails from her own page at compassbonaire.com. Prices for private charters are per boat, not per person — split between eight friends, the maths gets friendly.
The $10 legend: Bootje Biertje
Some islands have a happy hour; Bonaire has a boat. Bootje Biertje ("little boat, little beer") is exactly what the name promises: for ten dollars you step aboard the schooner Lady Bellaïs at six in the evening, a snack included, cold drinks for sale on deck, music on, sails out, sun down. It started as something locals did after work and never stopped — which is precisely why you should be on it. No dress code, no programme, no better way to spend ten dollars on this island.
Editions run through the season (theme nights included) and the boat fills up — book your spot and be at the dock by 5:45 PM:
When to book ahead
Boats are the one thing on Bonaire that genuinely sells out. Capacity is small, crews are local, and demand spikes hard twice: in high season (mid-December through April) and on cruise ship days, when ships dock in the centre of Kralendijk and day-trippers head straight for the Klein Bonaire trips. Cruise calls run mostly October–April — check when to visit for the seasonal rhythm.
The rule of thumb: sunset sails and Klein Bonaire snorkel trips, book several days ahead in season; private charters, book before you fly; anything in quiet September–October, a day or two usually does it. Trips marked "cruise friendly" are timed for ship schedules and fill first on ship days.
FAQ
How do you get to Klein Bonaire?
By water taxi from the Kralendijk waterfront or with a boat tour — the islet is uninhabited, with no shade, shops or facilities. Tours bundle the crossing with guided snorkeling; see our Klein Bonaire guide.
Are there boat trips in Bonaire for non-swimmers?
Yes — glass-bottom reef tours show you the coral and fish through the hull, completely dry. They're the favourite for families with small children and anyone not confident in the water.
How far in advance should I book a boat trip in Bonaire?
In high season (mid-December–April) and on cruise ship days: several days ahead for shared trips, and before you travel for private charters. In the quiet months a day or two is usually enough.
Which sunset sail is best in Bonaire?
Depends on your evening: a snorkel-plus-sunset sail if you want one last swim, a BBQ cruise if dinner on deck appeals, or a private charter for a special occasion. All chase the same golden light over Klein Bonaire.
Do boat trips include the nature fee?
Usually not — the STINAPA nature fee is personal, valid for the calendar year, and required for everyone entering the water. Buy it online beforehand; details on our nature fee page.
